Visuospatial working memory in learning from multimedia systems
نویسندگان
چکیده
Multimedia systems involve the association of various types of information: verbal information presented visually or auditorily, static or dynamic pictorial information, and sound information. In a cognitive approach, integrating this information involves complex processes constrained by properties of the learner’s cognitive system, and especially by the capacity of working memory. This paper, reports on an experiment focused on the integration of verbal and pictorial information when students learn a series of physics concepts. The involvement of the visuospatial working memory was investigated by means of a dual-task paradigm. Results show that pictorial information enhances the learning process. They also suggest that the visual and the spatial components of visuospatial working memory should be considered separately. Finally, they emphasise the need to consider the limitations in cognitive resources available to the learner.

The effect of verbal and visuospatial working memory spans on collocation processing in learners of English
Much interest has recently been directed toward the knowledge of collocations in the field of second language learning since they have been asserted to improve fluency. The current study was intended to examine the effect of verbal and visuospatial working memory spans on the processing of collocations using a Self-Pace Reading Task (SPRT) and relevant working memory tasks. To this end, partici...
متن کاملDifferential Impact of Visuospatial Working Memory on Rule-based and Information-integration Category Learning
Previous studies have indicated that the category learning system is a mechanism with multiple processing systems, and that working memory has different effects on category learning. But how does visuospatial working memory affect perceptual category learning? As there is no definite answer to this question, we conducted three experiments. In Experiment 1, the dual-task paradigm with sequential...
متن کاملThe Effect of Dual Task Interference on Gait in Aging: Role of Working Memory Components
The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effect of concurrent cognitive tasks activating phonological loop and visuospatial scratchpad of working memory on gait in older adults.12 older adults with the age range of 65-70 years performed walking trials in 3 counterbalanced testing conditions including single walking, walking while performing visuospatial task and walking while per...
متن کاملThe role of visuospatial and verbal working memory in perceptual category learning.
The role of verbal and visuospatial working memory in rule-based and information-integration category learning was examined. Previously, Maddox, Ashby, Ing, and Pickering found that a sequentially presented verbal working memory task did not affect information-integration learning, but disrupted rule-based learning when the rule was on the spatial frequency of a Gabor stimulus. This pattern was...
متن کاملEnhancement of Visuospatial Working Memory by Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS) on Prefrontal and Parietal Cortices
Objective: Previous studies have reported dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) and posterior parietal (PPC) activation during the performance of spatial working memory (SWM), so we decided to investigate the comparison of Transcranial Direct current stimulation (tDCS) effect between these two areas. Methods: Fifty-four healthy right-handed students (27 female, 27 male; age= 24.3±.2 years) w...
